The Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant, which is more than a contract. Covenant always expresses a relationship between persons. The marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. The celebration of marriage is also a liturgical act, appropriately held in a public liturgy at church. Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. (United States Catholic Catechism for Adults)
One of the engaged pair or his or her parent must be a registered and active parishioner for six months before wedding preparation can begin. The couple should make an appointment with a parish priest at least NINE months prior to the anticipated wedding date.
Married outside the Church? Would you like to have your marriage blessed as a Sacrament?
The pastor of St. Cecilia would be happy to help you with this. Simply contact the church office to set up a time with the priest to discuss the steps necessary to receive the blessing.
Have you or your spouse been married before?
If so, a discussion concerning an annulment for all previous marriages will be included in the initial meeting with the priest. The priest will be very happy to help you with any annulment processes. All previous marriages, whether Catholic or non-Catholic, of either partner, whether Catholic or non-Catholic, will need to obtain an annulment prior to beginning the marriage blessing process.
