The Big Reveal

The Coming of the Holy Spirit, painted by Juan Bautista Maíno, 1612-1614

The Holy Spirit in the form of a white dove with outstretched wings from which burst of yellow and orange light emerge, omitting the presence of the tongues of flame.

The artist identified the following Apostles:

  • St. Peter is the figure on the bottom left – very expressive moving both hands and raising his head looking directly at the Holy Spirit – in the full size painting Peter has a key at his feet (you will see this on the prayer card)
  • St. Luke is writing in a book, probably writing the Acts of the Apostles
  • St. John is leaning over St. Luke watching him work
  • Mary Magdalen is the women in the center with her hands in prayer
  • Mother Mary has her hand over her heart and her other hand is stretched out

The raised heads and wrinkled brows of the men is an interesting contrast with the serene faces of the women.  They all seem to lack fear; their reactions are more of wonder and peace.

This year's stewardship poster features an image of the Holy Spirit hovering above the apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Upper Room. Last year's poster, featuring Saints Peter and John, focused on the life of discipleship, one's relationship with Christ, and the fullness of life that flows from that. This year the focus on discipleship continues but emphasizes a life empowered by the Holy Spirit.

The image ties well with Bishop Carl A. Kemme's mission statement: "To go forth faithfully to preach the Gospel to all God's children and to Evangelize Today's Culture."

  • Acts of the Apostles 1:8, "Jesus tells His disciples that he would be leaving them; ‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.’"
  • Acts of the Apostles 2:1-4, "The Apostles were gathered in the upper room praying, when there came a sound like a mighty rushing wind and filled the entire house. Then there appeared to them tongues of fire… and they were filled with the Holy Spirit."
