Our 2026-27 CYM Kick Off Event--Kickball Slip & Slide will be Sunday September 13th from 6:30-8:30 pm in the field behind the church. All high schoolers are welcome to attend.

St. Cecilia's is sponsoring a golf tournament to benefit our parish school on Saturday September 12, 2026 at Hidden Lakes Golf Course 6020 S Greenwich Rd, Derby, Kansas.

Registration fees $120/person or $480/team.  Included in registration: Green fees, cart, range, practice greens and lunch. 

Prizes awarded for the longest drive, longest putt, closes to pin, spin the wheel, biggest loser and hole in one. 

• 1st Place $800/team $200/player
• 2nd Place: $400/team $100/player
•  3rd Place: $200 team $50/player

A relic of St. Terese of Lisieux, one the Catholic Church's most beloved saints, will be available for veneration at our church on Thursday September 17th. There will be a short presentation

beginning at 7 pm followed by time for prayer. Bring a blessed item. When you touch it to the relic, your item becomes a 3rd class Relic.

Virtus Training Tuesday August 18th @ 6:00 pm or Tuesday September 22nd

All persons having contact with children during parish or school activities must attend a one-time sexual abuse awareness session--VIRTUS--"Protecting God's Children".  This includes teachers and volunteers at St. Cecilia School including parents who help in classrooms, provide transportation for field trips, assist with school parties, sports, etc.  It also includes adults who volunteer in parish activities where children are present, such as PSR, Confirmation, CYM, OCIA, music ministries, altar server training, scouts, parish dinners, etc.

It’s that time of year again! All ladies of the parish are invited to join us Thursday afternoons from 1:00 pm-2:30 pm to come together in prayer and community. This year, through the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and scripture, we will be exploring our identity as daughter, sister, bride, and mother and the unique mission for which we are created. Mass announcements the weekend of September 5-6th, 2026

The Parish and school offices will be closed Monday September 7^th in observance of Labor Day.

There will not be confession time or Mass the morning of Tuesday September 8^th.

Walking with Purpose is getting ready for their next session and signups are in the back of the church.

Our golf tournament is Saturday September 12th. Sign information is available on the bulletin board in the back of the church and on our website.

Parents of 2^nd & 6^th grade students are required to come to an information meeting for sacramental prep next Sunday September 13^th at 5:00 pm.

St Cecilia was also known as Cecily, Cicilia. She was born in the 3rd Century around 200-230 AD in Rome, Italy.

She was a noblewoman is the patron saint of music and of musicians.

We celebrate her feast day on November 22 every year in the Catholic Church.

St Cecilia hailed from a noble family in Rome. Very little is known about her childhood except that she had vowed to God to remain a virgin throughout her life.

She was married against her will to a young pagan man named Valerian (who later became St Valerian). During her wedding, St Cecilia sang in her heart to the Lord as the musicians played. She is therefore known as the patron saint of music and musicians. In art, she portrayed playing the viola or a small organ.

When the time came to consummate their marriage came, Cecilia told Valerian that an angel of God had told her that God had wished that she remains a virgin. Valerian replied that he would respect her wish if only he could see the angel. Cecilia then told him that he would see the angel if only he got baptized by Pope Urbanus on the third milestone on the Via Appia (Appian Way). When Valerian returned from baptism, he found his wife Cecilia talking to the angel. He was so overwhelmed and thereafter, with the help of Cecilia, converted his brother Tiburtius.

Their conversion to Christianity did not go down well with Prefect Turcius Almachius. Valerian and his brother Tiburtius were martyred sometime before St Cecilia’s turn.

Before she was martyred, St Cecilia distributed all her possessions to the poor to the chagrin of the prefect who ordered her to be burned. When the fire could not burn her, the prefect ordered that she be beheaded. Responding to the prefect’s threats Cecilia replied “Do you not know that I am the bride of my Lord Jesus Christ?”  She was struck three times on the neck and still did not die. She remained alive for three days and during that time directed that a Church be built at her home. She finally died as a virgin and a martyr.

St Cecilia was buried in the Catacomb of St Callixtus. Her relics were later discovered incorrupt in the 9th century by Pope Paschal I, who transferred them to the Church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. The location of the Church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere is in the place where she lived. In 1599, her remains were still found incorrupt when they were exhumed to allow for the renovation and expansion of the Church.

The Pro-Life Committee will lead a rosary every Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm at the Grotto weather permitting. Otherwise it will be prayed inside the church. 

Representatives from St. Cecilia's and members of our Pro-life Committee will also meet quarterly (every 3 months--March, June, September & December), at the Trust Women Abortion Facility at 5107 E Kellogg Drive in Wichita at 9:00 am for first Saturday rosary.  If you would like to carpool, meet in the church parking lot at 8:30 am. Please know that there is always a rosary being prayed at the clinic on Saturday mornings and you can go any Saturday.

How to Make a Good Confession

BEFORE YOU GO

Examine your conscience, that is, reflect on what sins you’ve committed. It’s even all right to make a list to bring with you if that helps.

INTRODUCTION

When you come before the priest, begin by making the Sign of the Cross (praying the words out loud), and continue by saying, “Bless me, Father, I have sinned. It has been (how long) since my last confession. These are my sins...”

CONFESSION

List the sins you’ve committed that came to mind during your examination of conscience.

PENANCE

The priest will suggest something for you to do or pray as a response to God’s mercy.

ACT OF CONTRITION

The priest will then ask you to pray out loud your “Act of Contrition,” to demonstrate your sorrow for your sins: “My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.”

ABSOLUTION

 The priest will extend his hands in your direction and he will pray the Prayer of Absolution. You respond: “Amen.”

CONCLUSION

The priest will then likely say something like, “God has freed you from your sin. Go in Peace.” To which you can respond: “Thanks be to God.” Don’t forget to do your penance.  If it is certain prayers, it is best to say those in the church before you leave.

Go in Peace.  Thanks be to God.
