They will have a stewardship assignment due at the end of each quarter and we are currently working on learning the Prayer to the Holy Spirit and in the 2nd nine weeks we will work on knowing the Ten Commandments.

6th grade will be attending the diocesan Vocation fair in March. More info on that coming later.

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books Team Competition

Battle of the Books is a competition for 5th and 6th grade student teams in which students read from a list of 20 books and answer questions about these books at a series of three meets each spring. St. Cecilia hosts one of these meets and the other schools in our area generally take turns hosting the other two meets. Those schools are St. Joseph, Conway Springs; Holy Name, Winfield; and Sacred Heart, Ark City.

The meets take place on Wednesday afternoons from approximately 1:00-3:00. The first meet is generally the first Wednesday after Spring Break with the subsequent meets every other Wednesday.

Teams consist of 4 or 5 students and at times 4th graders have moved up to help fill the fifth grade team. Students who are interested in this competition must read several books from the list which is available on our web-site (under school documents on the front page) and in the school library. Teams are generally picked in early January from the most committed readers and will practice for their meets during some recesses.

If you have any questions about this competition please contact me and I will be happy to answer to the best of my ability.

6th Grade Social Studies

6th grade is using Studies Weekly this year in World History. It is important that they keep up with their weekly assignments in this class since they do much of this at their own pace with weekly tests. Check with your student to make sure they have handed in the weekly paper assignments and have completed the online portion of their assignments. They may work online at home on these assignments

Middle School News 8th grade Religion and Social Studies

8th grade is studying the History of the Church and reviewing the lives of the saints in Religion this year. We have been saying the Magnificat prayer everyday. Students should know this prayer by heart before the end of the year. Stewardship for the first nine weeks is due Oct. 5.

In Social Studies we are looking at American History from the Constitution to early 1900's with emphasis on the Civil War era.
